At New Melleray Abbey, the monks view the crafting of child caskets as a corporal work of mercy, and a way to bring some small measure of comfort to families who bear the tragedy of burying a child.
The Child Casket Fund is an opportunity for benefactors to help alleviate stress during a trying time, by reducing or eliminating the financial burden to families who are in need of a child’s casket. Donations to the fund are accepted to help defray the costs of materials and labor from lay people by providing a financial reserve.
Trappist Caskets frequently donates or discounts child caskets to families in a variety of ways:
- Any family in financial need can receive an entirely donated casket
- Some families choose to pay for the casket in full
- Other families choose to pay for the portion of the cost they are able to bear financially
- Still others may choose to make a donation to the Child Casket Fund in lieu of or in addition to the cost of the casket
Every family who needs a child casket interacts with the Child Casket Fund in the way that is right for them. The monks feel this is a small way to touch the lives of people in the outside world, while remaining true to their vocation.
How to Make a Donation
If you would like to assist a family who is purchasing a child casket and who may be in financial need, you may do so by making a tax-deductible donation. The Child Casket Fund is a 501(c)(3) organization.
